Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are custom-made caps fitted over the surface of a tooth covering its entire structure .  They offer a strong bond to the original tooth creating a very natural addition to your smile.

Why do I need a crown?

If your teeth have been damaged, cracked or broken, they need to be protected to prevent further loss of tooth structure, and to maintain the aesthetic appearance of your teeth. A single tooth that is not in the correct place can have a significant impact on a persons smile, and their confidence.

Crowns are generally chosen as a solution for people who have a portion of healthy tooth available, and where the damage to the tooth is not so severe as to warrant removal of the tooth.  Crowns can hold together portions of a fractured tooth, support root treated teeth and last for a number of years if placed and cared for correctly.

Dental Crowns are similar to Veneers, but cover the entire tooth rather than just a surface.  Depending on your initial consultation, we may decide to have a mixture of dental veneers and crowns or dental implants which will give you a beautiful smile.

What kind of Crowns are available?

Metal Backed Porcelain
A tooth coloured crown that is fused to a metal base, which gives this crown its strength. Long lasting but can often appear ‘lifeless’ due to an opaque porcelain needed to mask the metal substructure.
EMax Crown Metal-Free
Crown that offers longevity and has great aesthetic appearance due to the zero metal content.
Zirconia Crown
Created from Zirconia (a kind of crystal which is often regarded as virtually indestructible), this crown is known for its high strength and durability.

  • 1. Consultation and Discussion
On your first visit we will discuss what dental work needs to be done and take a look at your teeth to see which ones may need crowns.
  • 2. Preparation
On your second visit, we will begin treatment. The tooth is cleaned and then reshaped. The rationale behind this is to improve the shape of the tooth and its condition so that it is ready for the fitting of the crown.
  • 3. Impressions
An impression is then taken of your teeth. This involves the use of a mould filled with dental putty which you will be asked to bite into. The impression left by your teeth is used by our highly skilled dental technician as a cast which is then used in the fabrication of your crown.
  • 4. Temporary Crown & Provision of your Final Restoration
We will fit a temporary crown which you will wear until your new crown is ready. Once it is ready then you will return to the dental surgery for the fitting. The new crown is fitted and its shade and appearance is checked by your dentist.
ADVICE – Crowns offer a method for existing teeth to be saved providing enough structure is left.
